Getting Client Home Exteriors Winter-Ready

Buy Home Improvement LeadsBuilding trust with a client is one of the most important things a home improvement specialist can do because, let’s be honest, there are a lot of bad actors out there posing as helpful contractors. Part of building that trust is being open and honest with your clients and offering them helpful advice whenever necessary.

With winter expected to be especially brutal this year, helping ensure that your clients are prepared for it will go a long way toward strengthening your relationships. Simply giving them a few simple tips for how to prepare their homes’ exteriors for the winter can help you continue to earn their business over the coming year.

Here are eight ways that you can help your clients prepare their home exteriors for winter.

Clean the Roof

Before the cold and wet winter weather arrives, it is always a good idea for a homeowner to schedule a thorough roof cleaning. Giving the roof a power washing helps prevent mold, dirt, and mildew from building up and ensures that the gutters are clear, so rainwater or snow melt can be safely redirected away from the home. When cleaning the roof, you’ll also want to keep an eye out for any signs of leaks or cracks in the roof, so they can be fixed before winter.

Inspect the Home’s Exterior

Walk around the client’s home a couple of times and look for any areas that might become problematic if not taken care of before winter arrives. If you notice potential issues with the roof, gutters, siding, windows, drainage, hard exterior surfaces, patios or decks, driveways and walkways, or the chimney, inform your client, so they can decide about how and when to handle any problems. Also keep an eye out for any potential means of ingress that rodents or insects may use to get out of the cold and plug them up.

Seal the Driveway and Walkways

That crack on your client’s driveway might not be a concern in summer, but come winter, that crack can widen and cause a bigger problem come spring. So, now is when your client might want to have their concrete cleaned and sealed. This will help protect the concrete and restore the driveway or walkway’s beauty. Waiting too long could result in an otherwise affordable solution turning into an expensive concrete repair.

Protect the Deck or Patio

If your client has a wood, cement, or composite deck or patio, it needs to be protected from the winter elements. Cleaning and sealing the deck or patio will help protect erosion, repel water, prevent algae production, and protect its surface against things like oil and salt. It will help prevent the wood from rotting and restore the outdoor space and make it look like new.

Clean the Siding

Clean siding is an important part of a home’s curb appeal but keeping the siding clean is also a key part of preparing a client’s home for the winter. The cleaning will help prevent things like moss, mildew, mold, and algae from building up on the house’s siding during the wet winter season. Cleaning the siding also allows you to check for cracks or holes that can negatively affect the home’s insulation and energy usage in winter.

Prepare the Lawn

The lawn is one part of the property that can easily be forgotten in winter, especially once it's buried in snow. But what your client does with their lawn in fall will greatly impact how quick it bounces back in spring. The lawn should be thoroughly raked to identify bald spots, so they can be tilled, fertilized, and seeded. Your client should also apply fertilizer to the entire yard before fall turns into winter.

Trim the Trees

With the leaves falling, it becomes easier to see which limbs have died or became diseased over summer. Removing these limbs from the tree in early winter will help protect the tree and eliminate the risk of them breaking and falling during the cold of winter. Pay extra attention to any suspect limbs located nearest to or overhanging the home as well as any close to power lines.

Inspect the Chimney

Just about every home with a working chimney relies on it heavily as a source of heat during the colder months. So, it needs to be inspected and cleaned to help ensure it is safe for use. Forgetting this simple task increases the home’s risk of fire and can also cause harmful toxins to remain in the home.
