To Date, the IKEA Company Has Completed 48 Solar Projects
IKEA is a company that is aiming to make a positive impact on the planet by being committed to environmental responsibility within its day-to-day operations. For example, one of the company’s current goals is to purchase all of its wood products from sustainable sources by the year 2020.
In addition, IKEA is making a difference through its use of energy efficient LED lighting in its stores and in the lights it sells, sourcing its cotton from sustainable sources, and embracing solar energy to power its stores. If you’re operating in the solar installation businesses, landing a large-scale corporate account like this one would make a seriously positive impact on your bottom line. Read on to learn more about how IKEA plans to go solar in all of its stores.
One Store Saves Enough Energy to Power 182 Homes for a Year
IKEA recognizes the need to counteract the serious impact that climate change is having on the planet. One way that the company is putting its ideals into action is by turning to solar power for all of their stores’ energy needs.
For starters, IKEA recently finished installing the world’s largest retail solar rooftop on its brand new store in Fishers, Indiana. The project consists of a 219,000-square-foot solar array, featuring 3,888 panels. The 1.34 MW system will be able to produce approximately 1,752,845 kWh of electricity annually for the store. This system alone produces clean energy that’s the equivalent of energy that’s produced by burning coal in which 1,358 tons of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, or the annual emissions of 260 cars.
While this amount of energy might not seem substantial, it is when it is put into proper context. The amount of energy this system generates is enough to power 182 homes for a full year.
The store in Fishers, Indiana is the 48th solar project completed by IKEA, making 90% of its stores in the United States powered by solar energy. IKEA’s goal is to be 100-percent energy independent by 2020.
What Does IKEA’s Plan Mean for Solar Companies?
The commercial sector has traditionally made up the majority of solar installations. But, IKEA is taking it to the next level by aiming to power every one of its stores in the United States using solar and other sustainable sources.
By IKEA taking such a significant step toward energy independence, the company’s savings will definitely be noticed by other major businesses and industries. This will no doubt open up a tremendous line of opportunity for solar installation companies, especially those with experience in the commercial solar sector.
By sharing IKEA’s story with your clients and highlighting it as the gold standard for modern businesses looking to make a positive impact on the environment and in the lives of Americans, you should be able to help increase solar demand in the commercial sector, and take advantage of the continued rise in popularity in the form of increased sales and higher profits.
