Buy Solar LeadsSolar Removes Desalination Hurdles to Promise a Better Future for the World

It’s not news that there are certain places on this planet where access to fresh, clean water is extremely limited. For example, in places like the desert coast of Namibia, it can be almost impossible to find potable water that’s free of bacteria, viruses, or chemicals. But things are about to change.

Thanks to Namibia’s former and founding president, Sam Nujoma, the world’s first 100% solar-powered desalination system has been commissioned. The project is a joint development initiative involving the University of Namibia, Finland’s University of Turku, and Finland’s Solar Water Solutions and it has the potential to change the course of human history.

3,000 Liters of Clean, Potable Water Per Hour With Zero Energy Costs

One of the biggest problems with desalinating water in drought-ridden areas like Namibia is that it has traditionally been a very difficult and expensive process. Desalination is not only energy-intensive, but it’s also so expensive that it is economically unfeasible for anything but large-scale installations.

But the solar desalination technology being implemented by Solar Water Solutions changes this. In fact, the firm’s desalination system has been able to reduce the life-cycle costs of solar-powered desalination by more than 70%. The system is also fully automatic, decentralized, modular, and scalable. Perhaps most importantly, it’s capable of producing 3,000 liters of potable freshwater per hour with zero operational or energy costs – and it doesn’t even require batteries.

The dramatic reduction in cost isn’t the only thing making the new desalination system a game changer. Along with removing salt from the water, it also removes bacteria, chemicals, viruses, and other impurities and not just from saltwater, but from any water source, even contaminated borehole, rivers, and processed wastewater.

Solar Is Changing How the World Works

With the global solar capacity on target to reach two trillion watts by 2023, the potential for solar to truly change how the world operates is becoming more of a reality every single day. The Namibia desalination system brings to light how solar technology can be adapted for uses far beyond powering homes and businesses.

Despite being decades old, we’re just uncovering the potential of what solar has to offer the world. Namibia’s desalination system has changed how potable water is now being produced in drought-stricken climates. Solar has now come to dominate the market, representing 50% of the contracts for desalination plants.
