Tips for Renters Who Want to Go Solar

Buy Solar LeadsSolar energy is here to stay, and every year, more and more Americans want to enjoy all the benefits that come from going solar. These include lower energy bills, more dependable electricity, and a clearer conscious. But one segment of the population that often feels like they have their hands tied behind their backs when it comes to solar is renters.

Most solar marketing is geared toward homeowners and businesses, so it’s no wonder why renters usually don’t even consider going solar – they simply don’t think it’s available to them! The truth is, renters can get in on the solar revolution, and you can help them. Here are some tips to share with renters who show interest in solar, but believe they aren’t candidates simply because of their choice of housing.

Ask the Landlord About Solar Power

A tenant should never just rule out solar without first speaking to their landlord. In many cases, a landlord may not be familiar with solar or the benefits it can bring to their property, so some facts can go a long way toward getting the landlord on board. Share with the tenant all the reasons why their landlord may want to consider solar, such as it improving their property value, making their property attractive to higher-quality tenants, reducing vacancies, and of course, the tax incentives.

Shared Solar

Community solar systems is one of the fastest-growing segments of the solar industry. Instead of having solar panels installed on a home or apartment building, the property can get solar energy from a local solar farm, solar garden, or other community-based solar program. With this type of program, a renter pays a monthly fee for the energy provided by the off-site solar installation, and they receive a credit on their utility bill for the energy that’s generated by the system.

Portable Solar Panels

If a landlord is against having solar panels installed on their home, then another option for the renter is to ask the landlord if they would object to them using portable solar panels. This type of panel can be set in the backyard, on the driveway, or anywhere else the sun hits. While these panels can be considerably less powerful than a standard solar installation, they can be effective at helping offset some of the tenant’s energy usage.

Solar Phone/Laptop Chargers

If the landlord doesn’t permit the use of portable solar panels on their property, then a tenant still has options in the form of solar phone and laptop chargers. While this won’t offset a lot of their energy use, it will reduce the amount they use to charge their portable electronics. Over time, this can add up. Best of all, these chargers are affordable and can be charged simply by placing them on a sunny windowsill.
