Governor Cuomo Committed to a Renewable Future in the Empire State

Under the guidance of Governor Andrew Cuomo, the state of New York has made remarkable progress toward establishing itself as a leader in renewable energy policy. During his tenure, solar capacity in New York has more than doubled, and significant gains have been made toward the state’s goal of sourcing 50% of its energy from renewables by 2030.

New York has also been courting the nation’s largest solar manufacturers, to excellent effect. Solar giant SolarCity broke ground on its Photovoltaic Gigafactory in Buffalo back in 2014, and in 2015, 1366 Technologies announced a Genesee County plant that would manufacture wafers used in solar panel production.

State of the Empire State

Recently, the forward-thinking governor made waves with his State of the State speech, in which he doubled down on his commitment to solar energy, drawing enthusiastic praise from solar proponents.

In his address, Governor Cuomo pledged to expand the SUNY’s solar training program to train more than 10,000 students for clean energy jobs. He called for the conversion of 150,000 homes and businesses to solar, and announced plans to power all State University of New York facilities with clean, renewable energy.

He also reinforced his commitment to the 2030 renewable energy portfolio standard, reminding listeners that it was no longer a goal, but a requirement, since his Clean Energy Standard mandate had been issued to the Public Service Commission early last December.

And in a largely symbolic, but important victory for environmentally concerned citizens, Cuomo announced that coal-based energy production would be eliminated in New York by 2020.

In the days following his address, Gov. Cuomo revealed the New York State Public Service Commission’s approval of a 10-year, $5 billion Clean Energy Fund aimed at accelerating renewable energy growth, addressing climate change, and putting safeguards in place for extreme weather.

New York State of Mind

There’s no doubt about it: Governor Cuomo is serious about combating climate change and securing New York State’s position as a climate and energy policy leader. More importantly, he’s backing his ambitions with cash flow, and many private investors are eager to take part in New York’s new energy economy, bringing more clean energy jobs and investment capital to the state.

But what does all of this mean for your solar installation business? Well, if you’re currently operating in New York, then there will be plenty of work to be done by solar installation firms just like yours.

But as you know, competition in the solar industry is getting more heated by the second, and yours won’t be the only business vying for the attention of potential clients, both public and private.
