Ensuring You Have the Proper Certifications for Remodeling Bathrooms

Buy Bathroom Remodel LeadsStarting your own business remodeling bathrooms can be highly lucrative if you have the skills necessary to do outstanding quality work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field is growing at a rate of 5% and entry level contractors can expect to earn roughly $43,180 per year (based on 2021 stats).

But just because you might have a lot of success doing the plumbing in your own home doesn’t automatically qualify you to be an in-demand bathroom remodeler. To build a credible business, you need to have certain certifications that will help build a layer of trust between you and your prospects.

Here are the certifications and documents you will need to have when remodeling bathrooms professionally as a business.

Contractor’s License

The one license that every contractor needs to perform work legally is a Contractor’s License. This license is acquired at the state level, with each state having its own set of requirements. However, some of the standard requirements to obtain a general contractor's license typically include some combination of classroom training, practical experience, and standardized testing.

Test applicants must have a valid taxpayer ID number, such as a Social Security number, as well as proof of insurance that meets the state's standards, and some evidence of state residency, such as a utility bill or a state-issued ID. Applicants will also be submitted to a criminal background check, and be required to show proof of age and evidence of citizenship or legal residency, if applicable.

High School Diploma or Equivalent

To qualify for a Contractor’s license in most states, individuals are expected to have at least a high school diploma or an equivalent that is recognized by the state government. Depending on the state, the applicant’s diploma or GED may need to be verified, and they may have to demonstrate a minimum grade level for advanced training programs, prior to being approved to take the state certification test.

Practical Experience

Practical experience can be acquired in one of several ways. Some bathroom remodeling businesses offer apprenticeships that can provide one with plenty of on the job training. There are also local trade academies, work-study programs, and community colleges where practical experience can also be gained.

If practical experience is being acquired through an apprenticeship, the state licensing board may require the applicant’s employer or supervisor to submit a statement attesting that the state minimum number of hours were successfully met or that the applicant completed a certain number of jobs and acquired the appropriate skills to take the state’s licensing test.

To qualify, the applicant will need to have learned enough to work independently or with minimal supervision on a bathroom's:

  • Plumbing, including fixtures, pipes, and drainage systems
  • Electrical, including light switches and fixtures, electrical outlets, exhaust fans, and more
  • Appliance installation and removal, including toilet, sink, bathtub or shower, and other fixtures
  • Flooring
  • Drywall and paint
  • Mold remediation
  • Some cabinetry, such as the installation of medicine cabinets and storage units fixed to the walls and floor

Landing Your First Bathroom Remodel Client

After acquiring your Contractor’s license, insurance, and other documents needed to start remodeling bathrooms, your next hurdle will be landing your first client. This can be harder than you might imagine because despite the high volume of work available in this field, homeowners can be hesitant to put their trust into a contractor who hasn’t built up a strong resume of completed projects.

One way to overcome this is to ask your circle of friends or family if anyone would like to hire you to remodel their bathrooms. Or, you can ask your trade school teachers or instructors if they can recommend you to someone they know. Getting at least one job under your belt will give you a starting point because you can use before and after photos and testimonials to help prove your workmanship.

With one or more jobs successfully completed, you can then encourage your clients for word of mouth referrals and purchase bathroom remodel leads to help keep your calendar filled with profitable jobs.
