What’s in a Name? Solar Branding Tips for Your New Company

Choosing the right name for your company can make all the difference when it comes to running a successful business. To most people looking in from the outside, one solar energy company is pretty much like any other – though you know this couldn’t be further from the truth.

You can explain to potential customers that your company has more solar options, better customer service, and a longer running track record of success in your community, but first you have to get their attention. In many cases, that may mean finding the perfect name to set you apart from the competition.

But how do you choose that name that’s going to make potential solar customers sit up and take notice? Here are some tips on coming up with a great solar brand name, taken right from the corporate world.

1. The Basics of a Proper Name for Your Company

There are some basics when it comes to thinking up your brand’s name. For starters, it’s always a good idea to make sure your company name gives people a sense of what your company does. So, it probably makes sense for your name to have some variation of “sun”, “solar,” or “power,” somewhere in it.

Of course, a lot of these names will be taken already, so some creativity may be required in the process. Other ideas can be to include the founder’s name, a relevant location, or something generally memorable.

2. The Tricks of Naming Your Solar Business

Once you’ve got the basic template down, it’s time to customize your name to maximize its marketability. One thing you want to do is to make sure your name stands out.

A method popularized by the founder of Expedia.com is the Scrabble Method, which is to pick a name that is a high-scoring Scrabble word (or Words with Friends, if you’re more digitally inclined). Since rarer letters score more points, this is a good way to end up with a memorable name.

Another trick is to try to find a Google-Agnostic name. That is, choose a word or phrase that doesn’t yield a lot of results in Google. Even if you’re the only one who has thought of “The Solar Company,” you’re likely to have a lot of competition on the SERP when people are looking for solar energy providers.

On the other hand, if your company is named “Huitzilopochtli,” (the Aztec god of the sun), your company will probably rank pretty fast. Of course, with this name you will run into other problems (see below).

3. The Tests to Decide If You’ve Found the Perfect Name

Once you have a name, you’ve got to test it. There are three great tests you can do, with increasing levels of commitment. The first is the Siri Test. This means that if you say your company name, will voice recognition robots like Siri or Alexa know what you are talking about. If they can correctly identify and spell your name from a voice command, you’re in good shape.

The next test is the Bar Test. This one is the most fun. Go to a crowded bar on a weekend night or happy hour and find someone to tell about your company. Tell them the name and that you provide solar energy solutions. If they forget the name, need you to repeat it, can’t pronounced it, or ask how it’s spelled, you may want to adjust.

Finally, the comparison test. Come up with a baseline brand name, one that tells you what the company does, and is unique but doesn’t necessarily stand out, like “SmithSolar.” Set up identical landing pages with the baseline name and the name you really like and compare traffic. If your new name is getting the same or less traffic than the baseline name, you may want to keep looking.

Even if you don’t come up with the perfect name on the first try, using these tips should help you eventually come up with a name for your solar installation company that you love.
