Putting an End to Light Induced Degradation (LID) With Solar
Light induced degradation (LID) is something that has been bothering scientists in the solar industry for forty years. LID is the condition named for the two-percent drop in efficiency that solar cells can see in the first hours of use. While two percent might not seem like a significant decline in efficiency, when you consider that it affects a tremendous number of solar panels around the world, the collective loss of efficiency results in many gigawatts of lost energy that non-renewable energy resources are forced to make up for.
Being able to identify the flaw that causes LID and resolve the issue will be a game-changer for the solar industry, as it will drastically reduce the need for non-renewables to fill in energy production gaps. Read on to learn more about this vital new solar discovery, and how it might affect your solar installation company.
In the World of Solar, What Causes LID?
Researchers have produced more than 270 papers over the last four decades, searching for the flaw responsible for LID. Recently, they believe they have finally found it.
Using an electrical and optical technique called deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), researchers discovered that as the electronic charge in solar cells gets transformed from sunlight to energy, the flow of electrons get trapped. This reduces the level of electrical power being produced. The flaw lies dormant until the solar panels heat up.
During the DLTS study, researchers also discovered that higher quality silicon had charge carriers (electrons which carry the photon energy) that had longer 'lifetimes', something that backs up the idea that the trapped electrons are linked to the efficiency degradation. It was also found that the trapped electrons could be removed by heating the panels in the dark, thereby reversing the light induced degradation.
What This Means to Solar Installers
With this flaw finally identified and engineers hard at work solving the problem, solar installers will have one less hurdle to avoid when it comes to answering questions that challenge the efficiency of solar panels. Resolving light-induced degradation will positively impact solar efficiency moving forward, and this alone will make it easier to sell larger installations on both the residential and commercial solar fronts.
Not every solar prospect knows what LID is or how it works, but in the event you come across one that does, you now have the information you need to put their concerns to rest.
