The Truth About Solar Power

The solar industry, as fast-growing as it is, is still in its infancy and as a result, not everybody is so welcoming or accepting of this alternative energy resource. Many people listen to and ultimately wind up believing some of the myths regarding solar power. Therefore, it is up to the solar companies themselves to educate these “on-the-fence” customers as to the clean energy benefits of going solar.

Here, we discuss the top five myths about solar power and how to dismantle them so you can more easily convert overly cautious customers into excited sales prospects.

Myth #1: The Solar Panels Will Damage the Roof

Truth: Even though solar panels look heavy, they aren’t. Each panel weighs about the same as a second layer of shingles. Additionally, solar panel installers are very experienced at what they do. Most have installed solar panels on every type of roof imaginable, so they know exactly how to install them properly and without damaging the roof. The truth is, solar panels can actually extend the life a roof because they act as a barrier between the roof and the harsh elements.

Myth #2: Solar Panels Aren’t Effective in Cold Climates

Truth: Cold temperatures increase electrical conductivity. This means that a solar power system will collect energy faster and more efficiently in cold weather. Hot weather, on the other hand, causes a solar system to heat up and this results in lower energy production when compared with a cold weather system exposed to the same amount of light.

Myth #3: Solar Power Is Too New; It Will Get More Efficient Later

Truth: Even though solar energy systems are relatively new, they utilize a very well-established technology that was developed in the 1960s. And, while it is true that there are many manufacturers aiming to make their panels even more efficient, the reality is the future gains of those panels will be so small you will barely notice them on your energy bill. So, there’s no real reason to wait to have solar panels installed.

Myth #4: Solar Panels Won’t Work on Snowy or Cloudy Days

Truth: Although it is true that snowy and/or cloudy weather can reduce the efficiency of solar panels, it doesn’t prevent them from working altogether. Solar panels continue to produce energy even on these days; they just don’t produce it as efficiently. Also, solar panels are installed at an angle so snow can slide off of them instead of completely covering them. This angle also enables rain to clean away any dirt or debris that might have settled on the panels, thus helping to improve their efficiency.

Myth #5: Solar Panels Require Constant Maintenance

Truth: Solar panels are designed to require minimal maintenance. They are extremely durable and capable of standing up to the elements for several years. Usually, just an annual inspection is needed to inspect the system’s performance and the panels themselves. If anything goes wrong while the system is still under warranty, the homeowner doesn’t have to worry about it – the repair or replacement will be covered.

By addressing the above concerns and explaining the truth to the customer, you will have a much better chance at making a sale and improving your conversion percentage.
