Tesla’s Hornsdale Power Reserve Outperforms Expectations

The state of the nation’s electrical grid has long been a source of concern regarding its reliability. In fact, its antiquated architecture is one of the driving forces for the popularity of renewable energy sources like solar and wind-power.

Up to this point, the thought of retrofitting the nation’s electrical grid to be managed by solar and wind power seemed an impossible undertaking. But, thanks to the incredible and unforeseen performance of Tesla’s “big battery,” the Hornsdale Power Reserve, that reality could be closer than we think.

The Largest Lithium-Ion Battery in the World

In 2017, Tesla founder, Elon Musk, and Australian software engineer, Michael Cannon-Brookes, started discussing the project that would eventually turn into the world’s largest lithium-ion battery. It was installed in South Australia next to the Hornsdale Wind Farm. And, just ten months after being installed, experts can’t believe how effective and efficient the system’s performance is.

Tesla’s big battery is faster, cleaner, more reliable, more accurate, and more flexible than anyone thought possible. It is being touted as one of the best value investments ever made by the South Australian Labor government.

What This Means for U.S. Energy Production

Tesla proved several things when they delivered their big battery to Australia. It showed that the company can produce the necessary technology quickly, something skeptics never thought possible. In fact, the battery that was delivered was larger than originally planned.

Plus, the big battery was delivered in less than 100 days, and since it has been installed, the system has been making enough money that it will produce a quick return on its investment.

If the United States looks at Australia’s example, then it would notice the significant improvement in grid security, including several interventions in “contingency events,” greater grid reliability, and significantly lower electric prices for consumers.

The Australian Energy Market Operator was so impressed with the speed, accuracy, and flexibility that it enlisted the big battery into its System Integrity Protection Scheme (SIPS), the country’s first line of defense against events that could threaten the grid’s security.

Utility scale storage is the future of energy in the United States, especially with state shares of solar and wind expected to reach 100% by 2025. It’s a natural progression and one that Tesla’s innovative technologies are paving the way for.
