Solar Power Moves Ahead of Other Renewables

Human society uses energy like no other system on the planet. Our historical and current energy needs have driven us to create massive systems reliant on fossil fuels to drive production, transportation, and comfort. This reliance on fossil fuels has generated unprecedented shifts in the Earth’s climate. It has been linked to an upward trend in natural disasters, and by some accounts, threatens the long-term sustainability of life on this planet.

The need for renewable, clean energy development has never been clearer. The world’s political leaders understand it. The world’s spiritual leaders understand it. The world’s business leaders, at least the ones that aren’t in the fossil fuel business, understand it. And, maybe most importantly, your customers understand it.

And when it comes to renewable, clean energy sources, there is nothing like the sun. Solar power can offer you and your customers more clean, renewable, sustainable power than is available from any other source.

How Much Energy Can the Sun Deliver?

Each and every day, our sun delivers more than ten thousand times the amount of energy than we currently use as a species. About half of this energy dissipates in the atmosphere, driving winds and storms and ocean current. But, the other half reaches all the way to the surface of the planet as light and radiation. We can harvest some of the energy the sun delivers in a variety of indirect ways.

Wind power, tidal power generation, the burning of fossil fuels, the burning of firewood, biomass power generation, and just about every other energy source that you can think of is an indirect harvesting of stored solar energy. Thankfully we can also harvest a great deal of this energy directly, through solar power generation technology.

Why Solar Is More Efficient Than Other Renewable Energy Sources

Current solar power technology is capable of harvesting more than seventy percent of the available energy from indirect, ambient light and more than ninety percent of the available energy from direct sunlight.

These numbers are far greater than what we can extract from the potential energy of the winds, less than one percent, and from biomass generators, less than two percent. Only the burning of fossil fuels comes close to the same level of efficiency and at a tremendous environmental cost.

Solar Is the Best Choice for Your Customers

The stunning combination of efficiency and general availability, not to mention the lower barriers to entry, make solar the best possible renewable energy source for your customers. Estimates regarding its availability indicate that if properly taken advantage of with current technology direct and ambient sunlight could provide us with around one thousand times our current energy needs worldwide.

There are locations where solar may not be the best primary choice do to the availability of other sources, or lack of light in the winter, but overall solar power is clearly the most abundant source of clean energy.
