Round-the-Clock Solar Power Comes Closer to Reality in Dubai

Buy Solar LeadsAs efficient as solar power is, when the sun goes down, the power delivery responsibilities turn to the batteries that store the energy that was harvested during the day. And, as innovative as these batteries are, they have their limitations.

But in Dubai, the state-run Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is building its first solar thermal power tower, called Noor Energy 1, in its Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which when completed will be the largest renewable energy project in the world and capable of providing solar power around the clock.

Solar Thermal Hybrid Is the Answer

Dubai’s 260-meter-high solar thermal power tower is a 950MW hybrid project that will use Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) to heat molten salt stored at the top of the tower and parabolic trough technology, which features a tube that pushes solar-heated fluid along the focal point of the trough.

Once the salt and fluid are heated over the course of the day, the residual heat they produce once the sun goes down will be enough to continue generating power for an additional 15 hours.

Lowest Price Per kWh on Record

The $3.9 billion solar thermal power tower will be comprised of a solar tower capable of generating 100MW, three sets of parabolic trough arrays capable of generating 200MW capacity each, and an array of PV solar panels which will generate another 250MW capacity. And, it will be able to deliver solar energy that costs just 7.3 cents per kWh, the lowest anywhere in the world.

In fact, the energy that’s produced by just the solar portion of the project comes in at a record-low 2.4 cents per kWh. This is a cost level that competes with fossil fuel-generated electricity without subsidy for reliable and dispatchable solar energy through the night.

The plant will support the Dubai Clean Energy strategy to increase the share of clean energy at Dubai to 25% by 2030. The completed project alone will save 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere.

Currently, the power portion of Noor Energy 1 is 58% completed with 20% under construction and the remaining 22% in the advanced development phase. The water portion is 52% completed with 7% under construction and 41% still in the advanced development phase. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2020.
