Making Sure Your Solar Business Is Operating Where It Should

Going solar is a smart move no matter where you live, but there some places where you’d almost have to be crazy not to put solar panels on your roof. What makes these select solar states better than the rest? Well, there are a few key factors that help them edge out the competition.

Ample sunshine certainly doesn’t hurt, and it’s a big plus in states like Arizona, California, and Texas. But the sun’s rays aren’t the only criteria for a great solar state. In places like Oregon and Washington, the sunny days might not be as numerous, but the political climate incentivizes renewable energy to such a degree that solar energy is still a great value.

In other states (we’re looking at you, Hawaii!), solar gets a big boost because energy prices are astoundingly high. Let’s take a look at the best states to go solar right now.

Solar Power in Arizona

The Grand Canyon State is known for its sunny weather. In cities like Phoenix and Tucson, it’s basically summer year-round. Don’t tell the locals that, though: they reach for sweaters when the thermometer drops to 70 degrees.

Arizona’s 15% renewable portfolio standard goal may be on the modest side, and the state’s electricity prices are fairly reasonable. Still, Arizona and solar go hand in hand, as the state offers a 25% tax credit for the cost of new solar installations, not to mention a 100% property tax exemption.

New York Goes Solar, Too!

When it comes to solar legislation, New York is no slouch. With a goal of 30% by this year, the Empire State has one of the most aggressive renewable portfolio standards in the country. The RPS also stipulates that more than 8% of New York solar energy sales must come from “Customer-Sited” solar, a category that includes residential. And at 21 cents/kWh, New York’s electricity prices are nearly double the national average, making solar an even more attractive proposition.

Add in very respectable tax credits and solar rebates, and you’ve got one of the best places in the country to go solar.

Why California Leads the Country in Solar

California is known as a vanguard state; a place where new trends take shape before spreading across the country. Let’s hope that California’s solar policies spread as far and wide as sourdough bread, the organic food movement, and smoking bans.

When it comes to solar, the Golden State has set an RPS goal of 33% by the year 2022, and the utilities don’t comply, they’ll get hit with some serious fees. The state also offers a 100% property tax exemption, excellent net metering laws, and of course, plenty of beautiful sunshine.

Massachusetts & Solar

New York and Massachusetts have a longstanding rivalry. Just try to walk around Boston in a Yankees jersey and you’ll see exactly what we mean. The Bay State is really giving New York a run for its money when it comes to solar.

Here in Massachusetts, solar installations are exempt from property taxes for 20 years. Solar equipment is exempt from sales tax, and solar power performance payments are up to $375 per solar renewable energy credit.

On average, going solar only takes 5 years to pay back in Mass. Only Hawaii can best that speed record.

Oregon and Solar Energy

Oregon might not seem to be the best place to go solar, as the state has a reputation for being gloomy and grey. But the eastern half of the state is actually high desert, not unlike central Arizona. And while Portland has plenty of cloudy, drizzly days, the summertime there is actually quite sunny.

But it’s the solar incentives that make Oregon a truly great place to go solar. Solar adopters here can receive rebates of up to $9,500, not to mention state tax credits of up to $6,000.

Is Your Solar Business In Business In These States?

These states are among the cream of the crop for solar installers, but it was difficult to narrow down the list. There are so many places where going solar is a smart investment.
