Big Business Goes Green, Switches to Solar

The last few months have seen significant announcements from some of the world’s biggest companies regarding their energy goals. For reasons tied to the bottom line, as well as to public perception, many of the most prominent companies in the world are unveiling plans to transition the powering of the operations to renewable energy.

Many companies have realized that switching to solar power and other renewable forms of energy can save them money in terms of their operational costs. They’ve also come to understand that government incentives and flexible financing can ease the cost of transitioning.

Moreover, companies understand that their consumers are beginning to expect the businesses they support to take a position on climate change by greening their practices.

Some of the Biggest Brands Are Going Solar

U.S. businesses, governmental organizations, and non-profits are continuing to add megawatts to the grid with new solar power installations. For the last few years these additions have added up to more than one thousand megawatts of clean, renewable, solar power.

With announcements coming this year from several corporations (including Walmart, Goldman Sachs, Starbucks, consumer packaged goods giants Johnson & Johnson, and Proctor & Gamble), that they’ll be initiating efforts to convert to renewable energy, the future for commercial solar power looks brighter and brighter.

Solar Power Just Makes Sense

Converting manufacturing and support services energy use to solar energy just makes good financial sense. And further, the barriers to entry have largely been leveled by federal, state, and local tax credits and other financial incentives.

Many solar energy companies are even offering businesses solar energy lease options that take the set up costs down to zero in some cases. Add that to the fact that in most states utilities are required to credit businesses for excess power that their solar power systems generate for the grid during peak hours, and the financial benefits of converting to solar are nearly overwhelming.

The price per kilowatt of solar energy has fallen dramatically in recent years while the positive marketing and brand positioning benefits of converting to solar have continued to rise. These days, converting to solar makes considerably more sense from both ethical and financial perspectives.

The Future for Commercial Solar Is Bright

Add all of this to the fact that the divestment in fossil fuels movement has continued to gather support, perhaps jeopardizing their value -- and the future for solar power and other forms of natural, renewable energy production seems brighter and brighter.
