A Cool Installer Is a Happy Installer

The sun’s rays are a potent reminder of just how much energy our nearest star bestows upon us. It’s no wonder that summer is a popular time for solar installations. Consumers watch their electricity bills go up, and when they see all that renewable energy going to waste, they can’t help but think. “I should probably go solar.”

But if your solar business is located in an especially hot climate like California (or a cool one in a heat wave) summer isn’t the most pleasant time to actually install solar panels. If the proper precautions aren’t taken, working in the sun can even be dangerous.

Your solar installation team is a crucial part of your business. Obviously, you want to make sure they stay cool when they’re out in the field. Here are 6 great ways that your solar installation team can stay cool when the sun is blazing.

Wear a Hat for Solar Work

A hat can really help you stay cool. When you’re working in the sun, you want to make sure your hat will stay put when you’re on the job. And because much of our body heat escapes through the tops of our heads, you want to make sure your hat is well ventilated. Trucker hats with mesh backs and wide-brimmed straw hats are choice options.

Stay Hydrated When Doing a Solar Panel Installation

Skeptics are quick to downplay the advantages of sports drinks. And while water may be the healthiest option for staying hydrated, it doesn’t hurt to switch it up with the occasional sports drink. The main thing is to recuperate the water your body loses when sweating. Sweating might be embarrassing when you’re out on a hot date, but when you’re working in the hot sun, it’s your body’s natural cooling system. Make sure you keep that cooling system topped up, and you’ll feel like a million bucks.

Wear “Cool” Clothes When Installing Solar Panels

You could go the old-school route and dip a bandana in cold water, but there are some “cooler” options available. Frog Toggs makes an entire line of cooling clothing with evaporative fabric and ice chambers. You can purchase neck wraps filled with water absorbing polymer crystals, or if you’re feeling crafty, you can make your own. And as always, the traditional rules apply: stick with light colors and breathable fabrics, and you’ll stay much cooler under the sun while installing solar panels.

Plan Your Solar Installation Work

If possible, plan to work during the coolest hours of the day, and schedule your breaks and travel time for the hottest hours. Early morning is often the best time to complete physically intensive tasks like installing solar panels, as the sun has yet to really heat things up. Not only that, but you’ll get the toughest part of your workday out of the way with early, and that can do wonders for your work crew’s momentum.

Take a Break in the Shade

When it’s time for lunch, find a shady spot to enjoy your meal. Sitting in the shade helps lower your body temperature. If you’re working in an environment where there’s no shade to be found, you may want to bring a portable sun shade for break time.

Know Your Pulse Points

There are certain parts of the body where major arteries run close to the surface. If you run cool water over these areas, you’ll be amazed how much cooler you feel. Of your body’s major pulse points, your wrists, the insides of your elbows, and your neck are the easiest to cool off in the middle of a workday.
