Solar: The Clean, Green, Job Creation Machine

When you think of states leading the way in solar energy, Minnesota might not be the first place that comes to mind. But as a recent report reveals, solar employment in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is growing by leaps and bounds.

The report, conducted by the nonprofit Solar Foundation earlier this year found that employment in Minnesota’s burgeoning solar energy industry has more than doubled since 2013, growing by 131 percent in a mere three years.

Solar, Dontcha Know

As of the report’s release date, nearly 2,000 Minnesotans were employed by the solar industry, and judging by the state’s rapidly increasing solar production capacity, they’ve been hard at work.

Of the 1,995 solar workers, 949 were in the sales and distribution department, reflecting solar companies’ ambitious push to spread the word about the wonders of solar power to consumers and city and county governments. Installation and manufacturing together accounted for an additional 695 jobs, with the remainder in project development and other related categories.

The Next Solar Hiring Boom: Skilled Trades

It’s forecasted that during the next phase of Minnesota’s solar job creation bonanza, the hiring focus will shift to skilled trades necessary for installation. It’s also estimated that solar employment will keep growing in the coming year. While the state’s overall workforce is expected to gain a meager 1%, look for solar employment to grow by 20% or more.

It’s not just small solar installers that are growing Minnesota’s solar production capacity; the states utilities are investing in photovoltaics, as well, deploying community solar gardens and large-scale installations such as Geronimo Energy’s 100 MW Aurora Solar Project.

A Microcosm of a Bigger Trend

So what does this new solar zeitgeist mean for your solar company? Well, it means that you’ve chosen a great time to get involved in solar energy.

From small-scale residential installations to supersized utility-scale photovoltaic deployments, solar energy is gaining on traditional energy sources, and as a solar installer, you’re poised to profit handsomely from the oncoming solar revolution.

Minnesota’s big gains in solar employment reflect a trend currently taking place in states throughout the country. Solar accounted for 1.2% of all new jobs in 2015, and more than half of the states of the union experienced positive job growth in the solar sector.
