Walt Disney World Adds More Solar to Florida Resort and Theme Park

As a part of their ongoing effort to reduce their carbon footprint by fifty percent in advance of the year 2020, Disney added a new 48,000 panel solar farm to its Florida theme park and resort Walt Disney World and Epcot Center.

The facility is another in an ongoing string of sustainability initiatives enacted at the resort, and was accomplished via a partnership with Duke Energy and a local organization called the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

Reedy Creek Improvement District manages utilities for four theme parks and more than 40,000 rooms worth of hotels in the vicinity and brokered the deal directly with Duke Energy. The twenty-acre solar power generation facility is expected to produce five megawatts of power at peak generation, or enough to power 820 homes. And, it’s laid out in the shape of Disney character Mickey Mouse’s silhouette.

Disney World’s Ongoing Effort

The giant solar farm, once a forested wetland adjacent to the park, is visible from the air, providing visitors to Orlando with a reminder of the company’s commitment to leading sustainability issues. Epcot center has had solar panels up and running since the early eighties, powering its Universe of Energy building.

In fact, Disney announced last year that through a variety of initiatives it had already reduced its carbon emissions by 38% from peak levels in 2012.

More to Come for Disney and Renewables

This installation will only provide a small percentage of Disney World’s power needs. For that reason, not to mention the ongoing drop in the overall cost of solar as compared to other conventional energy sources and the rising cost of carbon emissions, more installations of this type are expected at Disney World and other Disney facilities throughout the globe.

If Disney expects to make its lauded goal of a 50% reduction in its fossil footprint by the year 2020, it will need a significantly greater investment in sustainable power. With that in mind, this giant twenty-acre mouse may be the first of many.

A Brighter Future

Joining the ranks of other Florida theme parks like Legoland in the incremental switch to sustainable practices, including the sourcing of renewable energy from on-site and other sources is good news, not only for Florida and the parks’ visitors, but for us all.

Every incremental step toward a sustainable future, driven by solar power, renewable energy, and sustainable practices is an investment in the our common ongoing viability and the livability of the planet as a whole.
