Solar’s Potential Is Limitless

If we tell you that solar energy is one of our brightest hopes for sustainable energy production, you’ll probably nod your head in emphatic agreement. You’re in the business, after all. You’ve done your homework, and you know that solar energy’s potential is basically limitless.

However, it seems like some people still need some convincing. The next time you find yourself debating skeptics or overcoming potential clients’ objections, point them in the direction of MIT’s solar report, titled "The Future of Solar Energy."

MIT Is Bullish on Solar

After extensive research, the MIT Energy Initiative concluded that solar energy could feasibly be scaled up to terawatt-capacity deployment by mid-century.

Even more striking is the finding that this large-scale solar implementation could be accomplished using existing crystalline silicon solar technology. Given the fact that developers and researchers are always searching for innovative ways to improve photovoltaic systems’ efficiency and reliability, it seems highly possible that this terawatt-scale benchmark could be reached ahead of schedule.

Key Points on a Solar Future

It’s clear that photovoltaic technology is up to the task of powering the world, but that doesn’t mean the path to a solar future will be a smooth one. The need to prepare our existing infrastructure for the solar revolution was a key theme of the report.

The Future of Solar Energy also recommended a reexamination of state and federal solar subsidies with an eye for economy, and the introduction of more compelling incentives for solar energy production.

Additionally, the MIT researchers encouraged lawmakers to make renewable portfolio standards, currently under the purview of state governments, a federal affair. Under such a program, each state would have to meet federally mandated renewable energy goals, instead of setting its own renewable energy benchmarks at a state level.

Another key takeaway from the report is the need for those with the political clout to affect energy policy change to bring their influence to bear in creating a solar-friendly political landscape. Will lawmakers take the hint? Well, that remains to be seen. There are certainly some members of congress who take climate change seriously and would love to push solar development to the next level... and then there are those who bring snowballs onto the Senate floor as proof that climate change is based on bunk science.

In a strongly worded conclusion, the study stated, “Massive expansion of solar generation worldwide by mid-century is likely a necessary component of any serious strategy to mitigate climate change.” On an optimistic note, it also mentioned the fact that the sun has more than enough juice to meet global electricity demand, and that installed solar capacity is growing rapidly due to falling costs.

Solar Energy: a Climate Change Panacea?

While solar energy can’t solve the looming climate crisis on its own, it seems certain that it will be a key part of any potential solution. Wind power, hydroelectric, and other energy technologies will likely play a role, as well. But no other renewable power source has as much potential as solar.

Solar is infinitely scale-able, making it suitable for energy needs large and small. It’s affordable, and becoming more so all the time. Even in its existing state, it's capable of providing more than enough energy for everyone.

The only things standing in the way of a solar future are those who stand to gain by preventing it, and you can bet they’re going to try. But you’re not going to let them win, are you? Keep fighting to good fight, solar installers of the world!
