The Sun Is Shining and the Birds Are Tweeting

Solar energy may not yet be a substantial slice of pie on charts illustrating the most prevalent power sources in the United States, but it’s a big topic of conversation on Twitter.

There’s a real sense of excitement around solar energy. It’s clean, green, and renewable, and anyone can choose solar energy without having to ask permission for the utilities. We don’t need the vast acres of windswept land required for wind turbines. We don’t have to live next to a roaring river. All we need is the sun, a rooftop, and solar panels. Going solar is an impactful change for the better that we can all make on our own. It’s disruptive, it’s sexy, and it’s more than a little subversive.

So if you're a solar installer looking to grow your business, then read on.

Everyone’s Talking About Solar

It’s no wonder then, that solar energy is dominating the renewable energy discourse on Twitter. A recent study illustrates that well over half of all renewable energy conversations on the popular social media platform are solar-centric.

Not only that, but almost 20% of those conversations are positive in nature, and only 16% are negative. Those figures might not sound particularly impressive, but only geothermal energy can come close to matching solar power’s public approval ratings on Twitter. Hydro, wind, and biomass don’t even come close.

What’s more, of all media types, Twitter is the forum of choice for the solar conversation. Well over half of all monitored solar conversation takes place on the succinct platform.

It’s abundantly clear that the Twitterverse is catching the rays of solar power in a big way. As a solar installer, your business needs to be a part of that social media conversation.

Not into social media? We get it. You have work to do. Still, unless you have more clients than you know what to do with, it’s definitely in your best interest to use solar’s momentum as a trending topic to your advantage. It’s not as difficult or intimidating as you might think. Here are some tips.

Speak Up About Solar

Solar is a big topic, and individuals and organizations with substantial followings frequently mention it. When your solar business gets involved in these conversations, the potential for exposure is huge.

Drop a particularly insightful or entertaining gem, and your tweet and business name could quickly gain an incomprehensible amount of online exposure.

Of course, giving your two cents isn’t just about the possibility of going viral. It’s about putting your brand out there. People buy from brands they trust, and that trust starts with repeated exposure.

Create Great Solar Content for Twitter

Your tweets may be limited to 140 characters, but their potential goes far beyond that. You can stretch their potential by linking to useful, informative, and engaging content. Play your cards right, and your business could develop a reputation as a solar thought leader.

Target Your Tweets to Solar Players

Social media applications such as Hootsuite and Hubspot allow you or your marketing team to seek out solar prospects in your area, key influencers, and current solar clients. You can even narrow your focus down to certain zip codes. By engaging with these people in an intelligent and genuine manner, you’ll be building a powerful referral system that has to potential to turn prospects into clients.
