Clean Energy Is on the Rise

Not too long ago, widespread adoption of clean energy seemed a long way off. Yes, the technology existed, but it was prohibitively expensive for most consumers, and much of it was of dubious viability for everyday use. The only folks really using renewable power sources were those who were willing to make sacrifices for environmental quality and had the budget to do so, and those who lived in isolated locales that made off-the-grid power a necessity.

But that’s all rapidly changing. Solar has been gaining ground by leaps and bounds over the past few years, and other renewable energy sources are gaining widespread acceptance, as well.

What’s behind these changes? For starters, the technology has improved over the decades, and today’s renewables aren’t the expensive and impractical technologies of yesteryear. Now, those who invest in solar panels, for example, can expect to save money in the long run and feel good about doing it.

Convincing the Majority About Solar

Of course, the renewable energy industry isn’t simply going to rest on its laurels. While price parity and improved performance have put solar, wind, and other green power sources on the radars of the rank and file, there’s still work to be done to convince the majority that making the switch is the prudent move. And as new players bet on renewables, and solar's appeal moves beyond celebrities and movie stars, new technologies are developed and existing ones refined.

When breakthroughs occur, the first step is often to patent them, unless you’re an altruistic visionary like Elon Musk. Thus, the speed at which new clean energy patents are created is an excellent gauge of the pace of innovation in the clean energy sector.

A Record-Breaking Quarter for Solar Power

Cleantech Group publishes a quarterly index of clean energy patent growth, and while the trend toward clean energy is hardly shocking, the most recent index is impressive, nonetheless.

The third quarter of 2014 saw the creation of 1040 new clean energy patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. That’s 100 more than were approved in the previous quarter, and a boost of more than 37% compared to the previous year’s figures.

Solar Lights the Way

It comes as no surprise that the index shows solar setting the pace for new innovation in the renewables sector. More than a third of the patents acquired were for solar technology.

Fuel cell patents were also up, gaining an additional 69 patents YOY. Wind patents took third place, and hybrid/electric vehicle patents trailed closely behind, gaining ground on wind technology.

Renewables Are the Future

Solar may be leading the charge to renewable energy, but there’s a general trend toward rapid innovation in the renewable sector as a whole. While renewables were once the domain of those in the fringe of the scientific community, major players in science and industry have taken up the mantle in a big way. Toyota, GM, Mitsubishi, and Seimens are all battling to outdo each other for the clean energy patent crown. Of course, there are still plenty of scrappy startups and garage scientists in the game as well.
