... Just No Solar Panels on the Roof

Roof-mounted solar panels are a popular choice for your solar customers, and there are plenty of good reasons to install a solar system on top of the house: it doesn’t take up any additional space, nor does it typically require the construction of any additional structures.

Plus, rooftop solar installation shades the roof, keeping the home slightly cooler during the summer months and reducing wear on shingles. There’s also the cool-factor of having a shiny new set of photovoltaics on one’s roof, which is a great way to make the neighbors go green (read: solar) out of envy.

But rooftop installation isn’t for everyone. If your solar installation business doesn’t market ground-mounted installation, here are some reasons why you may want to consider doing so.

More Space for Solar

The size of a rooftop solar installation is naturally limited by the size of the roof. Ground mounted solar gardens offer more flexibility in terms of installation. If the client has a sizable back yard, it may be possible to install a much larger system than their rooftop would allow. And if your client wishes to expand their solar array in the future, it should be a relatively simple process.

Don’t Steal My Sunshine

Trees, chimneys, dormers, and other buildings can greatly reduce the generation capacity of a rooftop solar array, and there may be little that can be done to eliminate those obstructions.

This is another area where a backyard solar garden is the clear winner. You can’t re-position your customer’s roof to catch more rays, but you can install a ground-mounted solar array in an area that's free of obstructions.

Maximum Exposure

Some rooftops may be less than ideal for solar installation because they face the wrong direction. As you know, solar panels should typically be installed facing south or southwest. Installing them facing other directions will result in marked losses of efficiency.

Ground-mounted panels can be oriented in the most efficient possible way, and that’s a big win for you and your customers.

Easy Maintenance of the Solar Panels

Solar panels are relatively maintenance-free, but they do require the occasional cleaning and inspection. That’s a much easier process with ground-mounted solar panels. There’s no need for your customers to risk injury on the rooftop with ground-mounted solar panels – they can simply spray them off while they’re watering the garden.

Ground-Mounted Solar: Tracking the Sun

Tracking systems can easily be incorporated into most ground-mounted solar arrays. These systems add expense to a solar installation, but they can improve energy generation capacity by as much as thirty percent. Improved efficiency will help your clients maximize their solar investment and save space at the same time.

Going Solar Whether the HOA Likes It or Not

For some of your clients, rooftop solar may not be an option due to homeowner’s association restrictions. However, ground-mounted solar arrays may be allowed. Offering ground-mount as an option can make solar available to customers in tightly controlled residential developments, and that means more customers for you.

Solar Gardens for the Win

While most consumers think of rooftop installations when they consider solar, ground-mounted solar gardens have many advantages. It’s important that your potential clients are aware of all their options. Marketing ground-mount alongside rooftop solar is a smart move.
