How to Determine the Quality of Your Purchased Solar Leads

Purchasing good quality solar sales leads from a reputable provider is a smart way to fill your sales pipeline with viable prospects. However, there are times when the solar leads you purchase don’t live up to the hype.

If you’ve purchased from a lead generation company that doesn’t really have its act together, or worse, a company that is misrepresenting the quality of the leads it offers, you’ll probably figure it out fairly quickly.

So, why aren’t those solar leads that you purchased working very well?

Just Shopping Around for Solar

Shopping around is part of the process when it comes to purchasing a solar power system. If most of the leads you’re contacting are on a fact-finding mission and aren’t ready to buy yet, that could spell trouble. Sure -- they could turn into sales, but there’s a lot of work educating the prospect on the benefits of solar to be done before that can happen.

Lack of Solar Education

We’re not talking about high school diplomas or college degrees; we’re referring to solar education. Because let’s face it: solar is still a pretty new idea to a lot of people. Now, it’s not really reasonable to expect a lead provider to supply leads that are always fully educated and ready to buy; part of the education process is certainly the installer’s responsibility.

But if your lead provider isn’t supplying at least a modicum of educational content, then you’re going to find that your purchased solar leads are very difficult to convert.

Buying Shared Solar Leads? Sharing Is Good… to a Point

You’re probably aware that some lead generation companies sell exclusive leads, some sell shared leads, and most sell a little bit of both. There’s nothing wrong with either type; shared leads are less expensive, but closing them is highly competitive, and exclusive leads are generally easier to close but more costly to obtain.

If your crack marketing team is on the ball, they can hit an excellent closing ratio with shared leads. But some leads get shared a little too much. If you’re finding that every one of your freshly purchased solar leads has already been contacted by 6 or more of your competitors, then you either need to up your game, or it's time to look for a new solar leads provider.

Old Solar Leads Are Tough to Convert

Some lead providers sell bundles of leads that are older than dirt. Now, we’ve seen some extremely mature leads convert, and if your sales team is sitting around twiddling their thumbs, there’s no harm in tasking them with working aged leads. You never know… a seemingly dead lead could turn into a big solar sale.

On the other hand, if you’re purchasing ostensibly fresh leads and finding that they lead to permanent email delivery failures or “sorry, wrong number” situations, then your leads might not be as crisp as the provider would have you believe.
